the head of isabella blowthe head of isabella blow, 2002, by artists tim noble & sue webster was recently donated to london's national portrait gallery. the work goes on display tomorrow and will remain on view through march 13. the artists will discuss their portrait tomorrow evening in which a contorted melange of stuffed animals becomes a vivid shadow of the fashion icon. blow is depicted adorned by what appear to be a pair of feeding crows, or perhaps thieving magpies. the silhouette, a signature strategy of noble & webster, here infuses the subject with mixture of the gothic, the wretched and the beautiful - a smoke and mirrors optical play evoking the phantasmagoric glow of a magic lantern show or a victorian streetlamp. joining them will be cultural critic michael bracewell.
